The Next New Thing

As technology advances, there will be more new media appear in our life. One new media possible is the access of products model display available right in front of you in 4D projections. Although it might seem to be a long term future progress but I believe that as technology advances, things like thing will b available for people’s convenience.

A lot of people like the convenience of shopping online, but can’t tell the exact feeling of the object throught pictures. This will helps buyers determine how it looks like in real life. I also think that this take will improve online shopping by a lot. However, this will have a negative impact on people because it will cut off a lot of job opportunities.

Our Class Wiki-So Far

I haven’t added any content for our class wiki so far yet. I have looked through it and am hoping to add information about social media privacy. I know about this topic because I did my research paper on it. Since social media is getting very popular lately, it is important to have awareness of our privacy. I will add new information in that category. I can see that the wiki has difference categories and I look through most of them, and plan to add information on this I know and change the fonts to makes it look good. One category that caught me eye is the New Media Love. It is interesting to see how social media can foster relationships and opportunities.

P2p File Sharing

File sharing is giving access to the documents that is uploaded to the site to others. These documents can include digital stored information, audios, images, videos and etc. P2P file sharing is different than public file sharing. It is sharing peer to peer. It is a system of sharing files directly between networks users and a central server is not necessary.

There are many examples of P2P file sharing. One of the most popular one is BitTorrent. It is a software used for file sharing. To search and obtain a file, the software will send out a request for the files one want to download. Then it will also search for others connected and download will ultimately begin.

According to, “The BitTorrent Effect,” Copyright becomes a problem because Bitorrent is becoming very commonly used in the public. I think its interesting to note that more people download certain files and the download time for the file will be faster. It is because there will be more sources.

Privacy

The issue of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media because a lot of personal information is available online due to the use of new media. When we sign up for accounts for email or social networking sites, we are often required to provide personal information such as name, birthdates and gender. Online shopping requires credit card information and residential address. All these personal information that are entered into the computer system are vulnerable to identity thieves and hackers, so it’s important to be careful and have a good judgment when determining what information to put into the computer system. It’s important to be aware that there is no 100% privacy or confidentiality on things that are posted on the internet or on the personal information shared online, hence it’s up to us to draw the line in deciding what’s acceptable to share and what’s not.

Advice

If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, I would create a website for students to leave their opinions about the school. They can express their opinions about the college, such as discontent or to provide feedbacks on things they hope to see improvement in. Then, I would check comments and other opinions regularly to find out areas that need special attention in. I believe that students’ opinions are very important if we want to improve the college because they are the primary users of college facilities. I would take each comment seriously and see if there are appropriate actions that can be taken for improvement. We can also promote school events in the website to get students more involve into school activities. Overall, a website can serve as a mean of communication between students and the college.

Creativity

Media foster creativity in many ways. The for example is the previous blog I mentioned; the picture people taken with words on it to do something if reached certain likes. I personally think this is very creative. This idea wasn’t out when facebook originated, but out quiet a while after. People use this technique to get likes and comments.

Another example is the reading, “Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Followers.” As popular as a social media becomes, there will be more people paying attention to it. People with new idea and opinions about things around them. I think twitter is very smart and up to date with what they did. This also fosters creativity. In the internet, everyone is connect. People share their lives and what’s going on around them. With the technology, it let’s the idea and creativity gets across. The message gets delivered. Without the social medias, one persons idea and creativity is only limited to the people around him/her. With the help of the social media, people are able to share their ideas, compare their ideas with others. Look through other people with similar ideas and revise them.

I think social media is a great tool that fosters creativity and delivers them like messenger. It definitely enhanced our lives and make the good inventions spread through out the world.

Creativity and New Media

Creativity and New Media

Lately, people have become very creative and took a picture of themselves with words. Most of them is about “If I get certain likes, this will happen” There are a lot of interesting pictures like this. The person in the picture is not me. This is a screen shot of what I found creative that goes on lately in social media facebook. Here is also a bunch of pictures related to this. This is my definition of creativity.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

There are many ways virtual worlds can be used. One thing they have in common is that they are virtual, meaning they are in the computer. There can be games where a character lives in a virtual made up world and the player control them. They will explore the virtual places, pass through virtual object specially coded for the effect. Another way the virtual worlds can be used is that everything is created already like the real world. And the controller looks in it sort of as a map and explore through it in detail. One of the pros of virtual world is that its not real. The game for examples, if the character dies, they can start again. According to black board reading, “After Second Life, Can virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?” It praised the game MineCraft. As stated, “It’s digital LEGOs if you will, but it’s a space for kids to exercise their imagination and to connect with others to also want to build and create things. And it’s the biggest phenomenon today.”  And you are allow to make mistakes, explore the world without afraid of harms. Another interesting article is,” In Room 100, It;s Sid and Nancy All Over Again.” It feature the virtual hotel and definitely foster creativity. One Cons about Virtual world is that people tend to lost in it that they feel that virtual world is more important. They have less social life. Some people are so into virtual world that they act to real world as if its the virtual world. I think in the future, the virtual world will be much more advanced that virtual characters will be projected around us.

Blog about Twitter

Twitter discussion is different compare to a BlackBoard discussion and a in-class discussion in many ways. Twitter discussion is more brief and limited to 140 characters long. BlackBoard discussion is longer and more detailed. In class discussion requires presence of people in room.Twitter is also more up to date and easy for mobile user. Users can tweet whenever and wherever they want. Twitter is a good way for people to communicate the little things in his everyday life. Blackboard discussion and in class discussion require more interaction between people. Blackboard discussion tends to be more engaged than Twitter posts. In class discussion  allows for in person interaction. Overall, I think each of them has their pros and cons. While Twitter can be convenient and brief, Blackboard discussion and in class discussion allow for a more in depth discussion. Choosing between them would depend on the scenario and all three of them are good use for communication among people.

Social Networking Sites

I have visited Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, and Q-zone. I am currently a regular facebook user. Out of all the four sites, the one I am least familiar with is Twitter. Myspace is the first social network website I used 4 years ago. It is very similar to facebook and q-zone. You just post status and you add friends. One thing myspace is different when I use it is that it doesnt have a chat available. I believe actually, facebook is the only one that has chat available out of all the four I’m talking about. This makes facebook unique, and this is why it is the most famous of the four. I still use Q-zone as of now, but not as often as I use facebook. Q-zone is very similar to myspace. You post your status, you add friends, you check other people’s status. You don’t have a chat online option too. So far, I feel Q-zone and Myspace and facebook are all very similar, like the same style. The only advantage I kept emphasizing is that the facebook got chat online option. Twitter I don’t use very often. I only starting to use it this semester because of this CIS class. I feel twitter is very different compare to the other three. It is more limited on words to post on status. New ideads like #, etc are not found in any of the other three. However, the purpose is very similar with all four. It is to post status and to check other people’s status. To connect and interact to network.
